Create a salary band

Define a salary range for the intended level and role without changing an employee’s pay.

Before you start: Have the approved level, role, currency and exact minimum, midpoint and maximum amounts. Confirm the band’s pay basis with the compensation owner; the form does not expose every frequency or working-time assumption.

Steps

1. Open People → Directory and confirm the intended Level and workforce Role. Match their full names and relationships rather than choosing a similar label.

2. Open People → Compensation → Salary Structure. In Salary Bands & Grades, look for the same level and role combination. If the intended band already exists, skip steps 3–5 and inspect its precise values in step 6.

3. Select Add Salary Band. Choose the exact Level and Role.

4. Enter Min Salary, Mid Salary and Max Salary, then select Currency. Compare every amount with the approved range and check that minimum, midpoint and maximum are in the intended order.

5. Review the complete definition and select Create once. Return to Salary Structure and find the saved band.

6. Open the row’s pencil. Compare the saved level, role, three exact amounts and currency, then select Cancel after inspection. Reopen the same band if the list display is rounded or abbreviated.

7. Keep any employee compensation change separate. A new band is salary-structure metadata; it does not by itself set a person’s base pay, approve an increase or make a payroll payment.

Expected result

The salary band contains the agreed exact range and relationships, ready for use within your compensation process.

Common pitfalls

  • A rounded midpoint in the list is not necessarily the stored value. Use the editor’s precise amount before interpreting it.
  • Do not assume annual or monthly units from a different employee’s pay record. Resolve the band’s basis before comparing amounts.
  • Do not change a band solely to make one employee appear inside the range; use the agreed compensation review process.
