Link a task to the goal it supports

Connect contributing work to the correct goal so teammates can follow its purpose.

Before you start: You need access to the Board task and the goal it supports. Know the exact goal title and why the task contributes to it.

Choose a useful connection

Describe the task’s contribution in one sentence: what output will it produce, and how does that help the result? A writing task may prepare material for a later review; its completion does not automatically establish the key result.

Choose the right reference level. A Goal provides broad context, an Objective identifies a focused outcome, and a Key Result identifies a specific measure.

Link the goal

  1. Open the exact supporting task in Board. Check its title and board before changing its links.
  2. Inspect Linked Entities. If the intended reference is already present, skip steps 3–5 and continue at step 6 to check it rather than adding a duplicate.
  3. Select Add link. In Link Entity, choose Goals in Step 1, then Goal in Step 2.
  4. In Step 3, search for the complete goal title. Select the correct result and choose Add link.
  5. Wait for the goal card to appear. Reopen the same task and confirm that the card is retained.
  6. Select the card’s Open control. Check the destination’s title and hierarchy so you know the task points to the intended goal.

Expected result

The task contains a usable reference to its goal, and you can explain how the task’s output contributes to the result.

Remember

Related Documents and Linked Entities serve different purposes. A goal reference also does not automatically populate a key result’s Execution Evidence, calculate progress or grant another teammate access.
