Create a campaign with a focused audience
Define a campaign’s purpose and audience so it includes the right customer records rather than everyone in your CRM.
Before you start: You need permission to create campaigns. Decide the campaign’s purpose, channel, owner and audience criteria, including who should be excluded.
Steps
1. Open CRM → Campaigns in the correct space. In Overview, find Campaign Portfolio and select Create new.
2. Enter a clear Name and choose the appropriate Campaign type, Campaign owner, Channel and Lifecycle status. Use a status that describes the campaign’s actual position; a new plan is not a completed campaign.
3. Scroll to Audience and choose the source record type: Prospects, Leads, Contacts, Deals or Accounts. Match the choice to the people or relationships you actually intend to reach. The initial selection may be Leads even when you want Contacts.
4. Choose the Audience field, Operator and Audience value. The available operators include Equals, Does not equal, In list and Not in list. Use the displayed comma-separated format for list values.
5. If you need several criteria, open Condition builder. Check the match mode, then use Add condition to define each field, operator and value. Use Add group only when the rule needs grouped logic. Review the whole rule before applying it to the campaign.
6. Compare the rule with a few known records: one that should match and one that should not. Check communication preferences and exclusions separately; matching a job title or lifecycle status does not establish permission to send that person marketing.
7. Review the name, channel, owner and audience, then select Create. Open the new campaign and check its Overview and Audience. Confirm that its saved definition matches the purpose you intended before enrolling records or preparing a broadcast.
Expected result
You have a campaign with a clear purpose and a saved audience definition. Its rules are ready to be checked against the actual recipients before any message is sent.
Common pitfalls
- Do not assume a blank value or zero badge represents a checked audience. Review the actual matching and excluded records before use.
- Upload spreadsheet, Enroll member and Evaluate all are separate audience operations. A campaign definition alone does not prove enrollment or delivery.
